Three CVA students tried their hand at designing a floral arrangement and learned about what it takes to operate a flower shop at the Herkimer BOCES Floral Design Honors Program on March 19.

The program was led by Suzanne DeLude owner of Suzanne's Flowers in Herkimer.

“Students learned about the many skills involved in becoming a florist, from secondary school possibilities, job experiences and trade knowledge to the financial and business skills necessary to run a floral business,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said. “They also heard about the time commitments and learned about the people the flower industry affects and the lives it touches.”

The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
