CVA senior Sandy Ferlo has been named a Horatio Alger New York Scholar. Sandy was selected from more than 40,000 applicants to receive a $10,000 scholarship and continued support to ensure her future success.
Association CEO Lesley Albanese included the following letter announcing the award and explaining its purpose:
"On behalf of the Members of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, it is my distinct honor to extend our congratulations as we recognize Sandy Ferlo as a Horatio Alger Scholar. Selected from a highly competitive applicant pool, Sandy exemplifies the character, determination, and commitment to higher education that define a Horatio Alger Scholar.
Founded in 1947, the Horatio Alger Association advances the enduring legacy of the Horatio Alger Jr. stories that championed perseverance, integrity, and the promise of the American Dream. Today, that mission lives on as we work to ensure that opportunity remains within reach for young people who have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity.
Since 1984, the Association has awarded more than $285 million in scholarships to over 38,000 students across the United States and Canada and now provides up to 1,800 scholarships annually. This scholarship provides not only financial assistance throughout the student's collegiate journey but also access to a comprehensive support system of academic support, personal development resources, and professional mentorship. Notably, Sandy has already had the opportunity to participate in our College Success Program, a year-long initiative designed to support the transition to college through individualized advising, structured preparation, and skill-building opportunities.
We are honored to welcome Sandy into the Horatio Alger family and are confident in Sandy's bright future ahead."
The Horatio Alger Association provides college scholarships and support services to promising young people in recognition of their character, academic achievements, leadership qualities, dedication to community, and desire to pursue the American Dream through higher education.
